The energy currency in the body is called adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and is formed in the “cellular power plants” called mitochondria. The hub of energy production in the mitochondria is the citrate cycle and the respiratory chain. Metabolic intermediates such as AKG (alpha-ketoglutarate), succinates and fumarates additionally fuel these energy processes. The more energy an organ needs, the more mitochondria its cells have. For optimal ATP synthesis, the mitochondria must be comprehensively and seamlessly equipped with cofactors (micronutrients). If this is not the case, it becomes noticeable in everyday life: fatigue, fluctuations in performance, limited concentration and the feeling of being “exhausted” are all signs of an undersupply.
