All our neurotransmitters are composed of amino acids. The amino acid L-phenylalanine is thus required as the raw material for the production of dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline, while L-tryptophan is required for the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Phenylalanine and tryptophan belong to the group of essential amino acids, which means that they must be intaken via our food as the body cannot produced them on its own. Sufficient supplies of B vitamins in our body are extremely important for the nerve metabolism. Our brain requires, for example, vitamin B6 for the conversion of the amino acid L-phenylalanine into dopamine. The conversion of L-tryptophan into the happiness hormone serotonin is only possible when there are sufficient supplies of vitamin B6 and vitamin C in our body.
