More than 200 enzymes and hormones require the trace element zinc for their activity. Debilitating heavy metals, such as lead, mercury, arsenic or cadmium can displace this vital trace element from the body. The latest Austrian Nutrition Report (2017) shows that zinc levels in up to a third of all Austrians (adolescents and middle-aged people) as well as in 60% of senior citizens are too low. The zinc metabolism is directly connected to the vitamin A metabolism. Vitamin A can only be transported from its storage organ, the liver, to the other organs with the help of zinc-dependent enzymes. The intake of beta-carotene (plant provitamin A) in the Austrian population is also extremely poor. Zinc deficiency causes, among other things, immunological dysbalance, slower wound healing, night blindness, acid-base balance disorders and reduced hormone production.
